Neil Simon’s The Gingerbread Lady (1970) is a dark drama with comic overtones centering on Evy Meara, a cabaret singer whose career, marriage, and health have all been destroyed by alcohol. We meet her at the end of a ten week drying out period at a sanitarium when her two best friends and daughter try to help her adjust to sobriety. Evy’s efforts to host a party crumble when she falls off the wagon and careens toward tragedy.

Written by one of the most promising musical theatre writers in the business. ORDINARY DAYS is a refreshingly honest and funny musical about making real connections in the city that never sleeps. ORDINARY DAYS tells the story of four young New Yorkers whose lives intersect as they search for fulfillment, happiness, love and cabs. Through a score of vibrant and memorable songs, their experiences ring startlingly true to life. ORDINARY DAYS is an original musical for anyone who’s ever struggled to appreciate the simple things in a complex place.

This Pulitzer Prize winner centers around the life of suburban housewife Diana Goodman as she struggles with delusional bipolar depression. In this powerhouse production, the Goodman family discovers what they will do keep their family intact and asks themselves what is sane, healthy, and normal. As the New York Times aptly observed, “Next to Normal does not qualify as your standard feel-good musical; instead it is something much more: a feel-everything musical.”

Here are some of the fabulous reviews for Next to Normal:

  • “An extraordinary piece of theatre.”
  • “Just the right blend of intimate and edgy that is the hallmark of the NHT.”
  • “Smart and funny…this production is exceptional in every way.”

Jim Carnes, Sacramento News and Review

  • “Powerful and provocative…Next to Normal never backs off.”
  • “Dramatic and intense… humor, subtle irony, outstanding performances”
  • “The honesty of the play and the integrity of the lucid new production at New Helvetia Theatre pay off handsomely with a rich experience for audiences ”
